HISTORY AND PHYSICAL EXAMINATION
Labels HIV AIDS
The prompt reporting of HIV exposures is important, not only for management of the exposure but also for identification and evaluation of preventive measures. The exposed person should be evaluated and counseled regarding the risk of HIV infection, the potential usefulness of PEP, and the need for follow-up evaluation. First aid, if necessary, should be administered as quickly as possible. After an exposure, efforts should be made to identify and evaluate the source clinically and epidemiologically for evidence of HIV infection. The circumstances of the exposure should be recorded in a confidential medical record. Data collection should include details about the exposure, information about the source, and details about postexposure management, counseling, and follow-up.
