Are Varicella and Herpes Zoster Contagious?

Most people who have never had chicken pox or been vaccinated against
it will contract varicella if they come in close contact with someone who
has the illness. Anyone with chicken pox is contagious from one or two
days before the rash first appears until the pox blisters have crusted over.
VZV is spread in the air through the coughs or sneezes of an infected
person. It can also be spread by contact with the fluid in pox blisters.
Shingles itself is not contagious. However, the virus can be transmitted
to someone who has never had chicken pox by direct contact with the
shingles rash. That person will develop chicken pox. Only people who
have had chicken pox or received the varicella vaccine can get shingles.
