PREVENTION

Intestinal parasite infestation is best prevented through careful personal
hygiene, which includes frequent and thorough hand washing, especially
after changing diapers, after going to the bathroom, and before handling
food. In areas known for parasites that live in the soil and burrow directly
through the skin, wearing shoes may prevent parasites from entering the
body. Individuals who travel to foreign countries known to have parasite
problems should drink bottled water only and brush their teeth with bottled
water. They should avoid eating raw fruits and vegetables, food from
street vendors, and unpasteurized dairy products. In addition, cooking all
food until it is steaming hot kills parasites. Avoiding swimming in bodies
of fresh water such as ponds, rivers, and lakes in these areas can reduce
possible exposure to contaminated water.
