The basic cause of type 1 diabetes is an insufficient supply of insulin
from the pancreas caused by an autoimmune disorder. What triggers the
immune system’s attack on the patient’s pancreas, however, is not yet
known. In type 2 diabetes, the patient’s pancreas is secreting insulin but
the body is not using the hormone efficiently—a condition known as
insulin resistance. In type 2 diabetes, there are increased levels of insulin
in the blood as well as sugar.
The central symptoms of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are:
