Researchers are trying to better understand the gene mutations responsible
for XP and to see whether there are any other genes associated with
the condition that have not yet been identified. Treatments being investigated
in 2008 included the use of a drug called isotretinoin in preventing
skin cancer in patients with XP and a lotion called T4N5
liposome lotion in protecting against skin damage caused by ultraviolet
radiation.
