How Are Phobias Treated?

Several prescription medications are used to treat social phobias. People
with specific phobias may also benefit from psychotherapy that uses systematic
or progressive desensitization. In this form of therapy, affected
persons work with a therapist in a safe environment. They are gradually
exposed to the situations or objects that cause fear. They learn techniques
involving relaxation, guided imagery, and deep breathing that allow them
to work through their fears in a gradual manner.
